Chapter · 19:13-21:17

The crew denied Algérie to the Axis at Toulon

Algérie's captain delayed German boarders long enough to ignite demolition charges, denying a valuable heavy cruiser to Germany or Italy.

Notes

When German forces entered the Vichy free zone on 27 November 1942, Algérie's captain delayed the boarding party by insisting on guidance from its superiors while his crew lit the demolition fuses. An intact ship could have strengthened Italy's depleted cruiser force after Cape Matapan or complicated British planning around Gibraltar under a German flag. The charges exploded and the cruiser burned for twenty days, ensuring that neither Axis navy received the capable vessel it wanted. Italian salvage, Allied bombing, and postwar scrapping then completed the destruction of a ship that never received a combat career proportionate to its design.
