Nuclear-carrier economics and the missing reserve

Nuclear carriers reward continuous use but leave no economical reserve hulls to absorb an emergency surge without disrupting the active fleet's maintenance cycle.

Notes

Nuclear carriers offer strong operational capability for a fleet working around the world. Their lifetime costs can be comparable to conventional carriers when they remain in sustained use. Leaving them idle in dry dock or reserve sacrifices that economic advantage, while fifty years of hard service also makes them unattractive secondhand purchases. Without reserve carriers, emergency deployments disrupt the active fleet's refit schedules. Conventional CVVs could cover temporary tours and return to reserve, allowing the nuclear carriers to recover their maintenance schedules.
