Informal names and archival searches

A naval proposal can be difficult to identify when an informal name differs from the terminology used in books and archival records.

Notes

An unsuccessful search under a familiar name does not settle whether a naval proposal existed. One carrier concept named in the viewer's comment could not be identified in books or USNI journal articles, so a different name remained possible. Alex Clarke recalls that some names passed on by his father also failed to produce results in National Archives searches. He used descriptions to find the terms in books, then located the archival records under those names. That experience leaves open whether the unidentified proposal has another name or was missed during the search.
