The Falklands War and the value of an ally

American alignment with Britain during the Falklands War shows how governments rank competing alliance obligations by strategic value.

Notes

Managing an alliance network requires knowing what each partner wants and what support each expects in return. During the Falklands War, Argentina initially hoped that its relationship with the United States would produce support or at least benevolent neutrality. The United States instead judged Britain the more valuable ally when the two relationships came into conflict. In this interpretation, that choice reflected a calculation of alliance utility. Each partner therefore needs to understand its value to the alliance, what support it wants, and what it is expected to provide in return.
