Chapter ยท 43:57-45:55

Scouting ahead of the destroyer sweep

Scout cruisers were reconnaissance and command ships for destroyer operations in waters such as the North Sea, Channel and Mediterranean.

Notes

The class still had a genuine scouting and command function. A navy planning for worldwide war could not use one ideal ship in every theatre, so specialised capabilities remained necessary within a broader force structure. In North Sea, Channel, Mediterranean or possible Red Sea and Indian Ocean destroyer sweeps, a scout cruiser could work ahead, spot the enemy, evade attack long enough to report, and help direct the flotilla. This made the class most relevant in enclosed or contested waters rather than across every ocean station.
