Scottish command, demobilisation, and Washington

A home command during demobilisation led to a Washington appointment where Dalrymple-Hamilton dealt with American counterparts as a respected full admiral.

Notes

From July 1946 to July 1948, Dalrymple-Hamilton commanded Royal Navy forces in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and their surrounding waters. The appointment placed him near his Scottish home while the service demobilised and planned new postwar roles. Promotion to full admiral preceded a Washington posting in which he could speak with American counterparts on equal professional terms. In this interpretation, American knowledge of Rodney's extraordinary performance and battered machinery gave the former captain immediate credibility.
