Scimitar performance figures and conflicting records

Dimensions, Avon engines, speed, range, ceiling, and climb figures establish the Scimitar's scale, while surviving sources disagree on several values.

Notes

The Scimitar was a large single-seat naval jet, 55 ft 3 in long, with a 37 ft 2 in wingspan and a height of 17 ft 4 in. Two Rolls-Royce Avon 202 turbojets powered it. The quoted figures include 640 knots at sea level, a sea-level range of 1,237 nautical miles, a 46,000-foot service ceiling, and a climb to 45,000 feet in 6 minutes 39 seconds. Period books and the BAE Systems heritage material disagree, especially on speed and range. BAE inherited the manufacturer's corporate archive, yet some records appear not to have survived well. The passage treats contemporary books and corporate heritage data as sources to compare rather than as interchangeable authority.
