Science fiction gives students distance to test strategic reasoning

Fictional and historical cases give students a basis for testing whether loyalty to a present-day side is changing their strategic reasoning.

Notes

The teaching sequence begins with science fiction, proceeds to an old historical example and a more recent one, and finishes with a current event. Students first work through the logic of a situation away from their present political loyalties. Those earlier cases then provide comparisons when the class reaches a dispute in which students identify with one side. If loyalty begins to replace reasoning, the teacher can return to conclusions the students already accepted in the fictional and historical examples. The method aims to make strategic thinking consistent across cases that provoke different personal reactions.
