Science fiction provides a way to explore naval warfare and imagine how ship design might develop. Star Trek ship drawings can be compared with naval architecture references and books on real warships. The proposed comparison follows the evolution of ship design and considers imagined spacecraft as possible directions for future designs. One particular interest is the difference between real and fictional ships in how much internal space they devote to engines.
