Schorpioen displaced more than 2,000 tons and measured nearly 60 metres long, with a beam of almost 12 metres and a draught approaching five metres. Two shafts, two engines, and four boilers gave her roughly 12 knots, with an estimated 1,000-nautical-mile range at 10 knots. Her iron belt varied from about three to six inches, while the turret carried eight to eleven inches and the conning tower about 5.7 inches. Even the deck received between three-quarters of an inch and one inch of protection. Together, those figures place the ship's distinctive monitor-and-ram appearance within a compact but practical package of mobility, endurance, and heavy defence.
