What made the Schnellboot a difficult target

A roughly 100-ton Schnellboot combined high speed, torpedoes, and gun armament, although its headline performance depended on maintenance, fuel, and sea state.

Notes

An S-boat displaced about 100 tons and had a stated top speed of 43.8 knots, two 21-inch torpedo tubes, and two reload torpedoes. It measured 32.76 metres long, with a beam of 5.06 metres and a draft of 1.47 metres. A crew of roughly 24 to 30 also operated three 20 mm cannon, one on a single mount and two on a twin mount, plus a 37 mm flak cannon. This combination made the Schnellboot a powerful coastal combatant. Its headline speed depended on maintained machinery, available parts, good fuel, and favorable sea conditions.
