Scheveningen: breaking the blockade at heavy cost

The Dutch broke the English blockade at Scheveningen but lost enough ships and men to help drive the war toward peace.

Notes

At the Battle of Scheveningen, George Monck commanded about 120 English warships against roughly 127 under Maarten Tromp. The Dutch broke the blockade, but the English sank more Dutch ships. Estimates in the discussion range from fourteen to thirty Dutch ships lost, along with heavy loss of life. Those costs helped produce agreement on a peace treaty. Scheveningen achieved the Dutch operational aim of breaking the blockade, but the losses made continued war harder to sustain.
