What Tirpitz gained for 10,000 extra tons

A same-yard comparison asks whether Tirpitz's heavier guns and longer range justified roughly 10,000 tons beyond Scharnhorst.

Notes

Scharnhorst carried a thicker main belt despite displacing about 10,000 tons less than Tirpitz. The larger ship added eight 15-inch guns in place of nine 11-inch guns, nearly 2,000 nautical miles of range at 19 knots, about 400 more crew, two additional 105 mm guns, more 20 mm cannon, two torpedo tubes, and another floatplane. It gave up a little speed in return. The extra displacement therefore bought roughly the effect of another heavy-gun turret plus greater endurance, rather than a wholly different protection standard. Because the same yard moved from Scharnhorst to Tirpitz, the comparison exposes the practical cost of Germany's next design step. Tirpitz's limited active use then raises the strategic question of whether those added capabilities justified their construction and operating cost.
