Why Scharnhorst's 11-inch guns do not define her as a battlecruiser

The Scharnhorst class carried 11-inch guns because larger weapons were not yet available, not because the ships were conceived as lightly armed battlecruisers.

Notes

The 11-inch battery reflected Germany's inability to produce a larger weapon when the hulls were ready. Waiting for a new gun would have left two expensive ships idle during construction. A later conversion to 15-inch guns was contemplated, showing that the initial armament was an industrial compromise rather than the class's final conceptual limit. Classification should follow intended role and protection rather than gun caliber alone.
