Could Spee's cruisers have served better elsewhere?

The closing counterfactual weighs the East Asia Squadron's wartime achievements against what Germany might have gained by concentrating Scharnhorst and Gneisenau closer to home.

Notes

Continuing the Scharnhorst line in place of battlecruisers would have required Alfred von Tirpitz to leave power and a wholesale change in German naval policy. Additional armored cruisers still leave deployment strategy unresolved. The more practical counterfactual asks whether the two existing ships could have contributed more from a position closer to Germany. Their operations under Maximilian von Spee demonstrated what they could do, and both ships were eventually destroyed at the Battle of the Falklands while far from home. The choice pits overseas presence against force concentration during a growing crisis. The judgment remains open: their stationing may have been necessary, or Germany may have kept them abroad too long.
