Scharnhorst and the meaning of a fast battleship

Scharnhorst's 11-inch guns alone do not make her a battlecruiser; German armament readiness and intended role support the fast-battleship classification.

Notes

Scharnhorst followed retained pre-dreadnoughts and Deutschland-class ships in Germany's uneven fleet reconstruction. A battlecruiser normally carries the same main battery as its contemporary battleships while trading protection for speed. Germany's 11-inch guns were the largest weapons it had ready, so Scharnhorst was a fast battleship shaped by industrial readiness. The possibility of buying Italian 15-inch guns for a six-gun design shows that armament readiness involved choices as well as constraints. Classification here depends on a navy's available armament and intended role, rather than gun diameter alone.
