Scaurus loses Rome's reconnaissance tripwire

The destruction of Scaurus's forward cavalry post shows that Rome's first warning position failed before the main armies ever engaged.

Notes

A senior legate should have brought experience to the reconnaissance force posted roughly thirty miles ahead of Mallius's camp. Roman command deliberately distributed seasoned legates and tribunes through an army so that knowledge did not depend on one general. Yet the force serving as the army's mounted tripwire was surprised and overrun before it could escape or warn the main camp. Scaurus was captured and killed after defiantly predicting that Rome would destroy his interrogators. The episode removes a senior officer and reveals a serious scouting failure before the main armies ever engage.
