Scarborough repels a stronger French privateer

A small pooled crew allowed Scarborough to defeat a much larger French privateer and protect two companion ships.

Notes

In January 1805 Scarborough was sailing with Dorset and King George when the three merchant ships met a French privateer carrying 16 guns and nearly 200 men. The companion captains reinforced James Scott with twelve men, giving him 27 men and boys, including a passenger from the 60th Regiment. Scarborough drove off the privateer after an hour-long engagement, losing one man while her first officer received a mortal wound. The privateer's losses were estimated at as many as 70, and all three British ships reached Barbados the next day.
