Scarborough was a copper-sheathed merchant bark that carried 208 male convicts and a Marine detachment on the First Fleet voyage. When a possible mutiny was reported, the alleged leaders were flogged aboard Sirius and moved to Prince of Wales, separating them from their associates and from the flagship's weapons. Her later record included a successful defense against a French privateer after Captain James Scott pooled men from two companion merchant ships. On the First Fleet return voyage, Scarborough and Charlotte stopped at Tinian after scurvy badly weakened their crews, then joined an East India Company convoy at Macau. Commercial shipping networks supplied protection, cargo, and revenue for the long journey home.
