Scarborough and Charlotte left Port Jackson for China, stopping at Lord Howe Island for birds and vegetables. They reportedly became the first European vessels to pass among the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. Scurvy then weakened Scarborough's crew so severely that the ships anchored at Tinian for food and recovery, narrowly escaping being blown ashore. At Macau they were chartered as extra ships for an East India Company convoy. The arrangement provided cargo revenue and the protection of armed company ships and an escorting warship for the passage home.
