Scapa Flow as harbour and energy port

Scapa Flow's sheltered anchorage has a history older than its world-war fame and remains useful for ship-to-ship energy transfers.

Notes

Scapa Flow's natural harbour has a maritime history much older than its role in the world wars. It hosted the world's first ship-to-ship transfer of liquefied natural gas in 2007 and is also used for crude-oil transfers. Its broad, sheltered waters can accommodate this traffic even though the shore has little heavy infrastructure. That combination of space and isolation continues to shape what the anchorage can support.
