SBX-1 trades speed for mobile missile warning

SBX-1 mounts a long-range X-band radar on a slow semi-submersible platform, gaining strategic mobility while broadcasting its own position whenever the radar operates.

Notes

SBX-1 supports ballistic-missile tracking by placing a powerful X-band radar where a land installation may not be available. The roughly $900-million system can track across about 2,000 kilometers from a semi-submersible platform displacing approximately 45,000 metric tons. It is self-propelled, but its nine-knot speed makes a heavy-lift ship preferable for long-distance transport. Strategic mobility lets one costly asset cover changing priorities and makes it harder to pre-target than a fixed installation, especially if surveillance is disrupted during a crisis. The tradeoff is electromagnetic visibility: a radar powerful enough to collect interception data broadcasts a conspicuous signal that can be detected well beyond its own useful tracking range.
