What if Mikawa attacked the Savo Island transports?

Attacking the transports would expose Mikawa to surviving Allied warships for losses the Allies could more readily replace.

Question

How would Savo Island have changed if Mikawa attacked the transports as well as the Allied warships?

Short answer

He could have sunk transports, but the assessment assumes many were already largely unloaded; diverting fire towards them would expose his force to surviving Allied warships.

Notes

Many transports were recalled as largely unloaded by the time Mikawa could have attacked them. Fire directed at merchant ships would reduce the fire available against Allied combatants, giving those warships more opportunity to close and counterattack. HMAS Australia and other surviving ships would present a further prepared force. Allied construction programmes also made merchant losses easier to replace. Withdrawal avoided pressing on without accurate information about the remaining opposition.
