Saumarez turned defeat into victory in six days

The two Battles of Algeciras frame James Saumarez as a commander who accepted a costly defeat, restored his squadron, and won decisively six days later.

Notes

On 6 July 1801, Saumarez attacked a smaller but strongly positioned French force with six ships of the line and lost HMS Hannibal. Six days later, he pursued a much larger Franco-Spanish squadron and destroyed or captured major warships at far lower British cost. He accepted responsibility for the first defeat, repaired his force, learned what the situation demanded, and remained aggressive enough to exploit a second chance. The reversal makes Algeciras a study of recovering command effectiveness after a serious setback.
