Even the United States' extensive satellite network has gaps in peacetime coverage. War adds deliberate attempts to disable or destroy satellites. Possible methods include missiles fired from the ground, blinding with directed radiation, or a collision presented as an accident during a disposal manoeuvre. A fleet's position therefore cannot simply be assumed to remain visible through a continuous, secure satellite picture.

Satellite reconnaissance still has gaps in wartime
Peacetime coverage gaps and wartime attacks on satellites limit the assumption that an enemy always knows where a fleet is.
