Chapter · 56:33-1:00:11

Saratoga raids Panama and is caught on recovery

Saratoga's surprise canal strike succeeded, but fuel shortages, a missed rendezvous, and leaked position reports exposed aircraft, codebooks, and the carrier.

Notes

Detroit's reports prompted an attempt to send Lexington against Saratoga, but Lexington's imposed speed restriction prevented her from finding the carrier. Saratoga launched seventy aircraft from about 140 miles south of the Panama Canal and achieved surprise despite the leaked position reports. Some aircraft ran short of fuel and landed at enemy fields, where crews failed to destroy codebooks. Recovering the returning aircraft required Saratoga to approach the canal zone. Her supporting battleships missed their intended rendezvous by about 140 miles because of navigation errors and earlier engagements. Enemy battleships and a submarine subsequently found and notionally sank the carrier, with Detroit's continued reporting further compromising her position.
