Saratoga signals American interest during Mediterranean crises

Saratoga hosted President Nixon and led a task group after an airline hijacking and the Libyan coup. Its name linked Cold War service to a wartime carrier lost in nuclear testing.

Notes

Between May 1969 and September 1970, USS Saratoga hosted President Richard Nixon twice. It also led a task group in a show of force after the hijacking of a Trans World Airlines flight to Syria and the coup in Libya. A worked-up carrier could therefore provide reassurance, warning, and crisis response without firing weapons. The namesake connection reaches back to the earlier USS Saratoga, a veteran carrier sunk during nuclear testing after the Second World War. Describing that destruction as cultural and historical vandalism makes the link a lesson in naval heritage as well as operational presence.
