Was Santísima Trinidad actually a good warship?
Short answerShe was powerful in a conventional line engagement but too unwieldy to use that strength easily in Trafalgar's close melee.
NotesThe ship was both a Spanish status symbol and a serious artillery platform when used in her intended role. In a conventional parallel line engagement, her many decks could sustain an imposing broadside. The difficulty was manoeuvre: a very large four-decker could not rapidly reposition as British columns forced the battle into a close melee. Once the formation broke down, her limited handling made it difficult to bring the enormous battery to bear effectively.
