Nelson's wound exposed the cost of missing siege patience

Nelson pressed the rapid assault his temperament favored, lost his right arm, and failed to adopt the patient siege method the defended port required.

Notes

Nelson's right arm was shattered during the attack, and he characteristically swung from demanding immediate amputation to fearing that a one-armed admiral would no longer be useful. The larger operational failure came before the wound. Once surprise disappeared, the British needed sustained bombardment, reduced artillery, a breached wall, a secure landing place, concentrated troops, and organized logistics ashore. Nelson excelled at inspiring a sudden assault but lacked the patience to move through that methodical sequence. The episode turns his intensity from a heroic trait into a capability with clear limits when time and siegecraft mattered more than momentum.
