Santa Cruz was a fortress, not an easy raid

Repeated British interest in Santa Cruz underestimated a naturally strong port whose prepared defenders demanded a larger, methodical assault.

Notes

Santa Cruz de Tenerife attracted British attacks because Spanish treasure fleets used the Canary Islands, but its natural and constructed defences repeatedly punished underestimation. Nelson brought roughly 4,000 soldiers and sailors with three ships of the line, three frigates, a cutter, and a bomb vessel. The defenders numbered about 1,700 regulars, militia, and sailors who were organized and dug in. Those figures did not provide the overwhelming advantage needed once surprise had been lost. Taking the port required a deliberately assembled siege force rather than a small squadron dispatched in the confidence created by a recent victory.
