Why Álvaro de Bazán's death weakened the Armada

Álvaro de Bazán, Marquis of Santa Cruz, combined experience, status, and a strategic conception of the expedition that later commanders lacked.

Notes

Santa Cruz was the senior Spanish naval commander whose victories in the Azores and service around Lepanto gave him practical authority as well as noble status. That combination mattered because the expedition was crowded with aristocrats eager for glory but less eager to accept difficult subordinate work. Drake's Cadiz raid damaged Santa Cruz's fleet and helped delay the project by a year. Santa Cruz also had to reconcile his ambitious operational ideas with Philip II and the independently minded Duke of Parma. His death removed the commander best placed to turn the strategic conception into a workable naval operation while controlling the Armada's noble hierarchy.
