The Magellan route becomes a submerged hydrographic survey

The Magellan route provided a historical framework for gathering submerged-navigation knowledge and preparing crews for prolonged Polaris patrols.

Notes

Triton's route followed Magellan's voyage as closely as its American departure and submarine requirements allowed. The historical connection supplied a public explanation for a track that also gathered useful depth and navigation information. Geophysical and oceanographic research addressed where submarines could operate, while habitability and psychological research addressed the endurance of their crews. Both supported preparations for prolonged Polaris patrols. The boat made this survey before GPS, encountering underwater features that could subsequently be named for members of its crew.
