Sandblast proves the nuclear submarine has come of age

The conclusion explains why an entirely submerged circumnavigation mattered as a prestige achievement and as a foundation for Polaris and later submarine patrols.

Notes

Triton's selected captain, unusually capable crew, and dependable twin-reactor plant turned Sandblast into a public declaration that nuclear submarines had matured. The boat could submerge after leaving port, circle the globe, and reappear without revealing its route to other states. The achievement combined prestige with operational proof. The US Navy gained experience with crew endurance, navigation, hydrography, and continuous submerged operations that was directly relevant to Polaris deterrent patrols. Sandblast therefore helped establish the operating foundation for later nuclear submarines even though Triton herself had a short service life.
