San Nicolás in the Argentine war of independence

The battle emerged from the collapse of Spanish authority in the Río de la Plata during the Napoleonic Wars.

Notes

San Nicolás belongs to the same crisis as the Peninsular War, the May Revolution, and the earlier British invasions of the Río de la Plata. The invasions showed both the wealth of the River Plate and the weakness of Spanish control, while forcing local society to raise forces for its own defence. Napoleon’s occupation then left colonists asking whether they remained bound to a monarchy that could no longer govern freely. Spain’s trade monopoly and inability to send regular warships aggravated local political and economic tensions. Montevideo’s naval base supported the royalist blockade of Buenos Aires, prompting the revolutionary Junta to create a fleet to contest local waters.
