Chapter · 2:05:01-2:18:31

Samuel Hood was a fleet commander in an administrator's chair

Contrast Hood's fighting reputation and mentorship of Nelson with his impatience for budgets, delegation, and institutional limits.

Notes

Hood brought extensive combat and fleet-command experience to the Admiralty and proved adept at identifying and supporting officers such as Horatio Nelson. That patronage ran through Nelson's uncle Suckling and included introducing Nelson to the Duke of Clarence, the future William IV. Yet Hood expected subordinates and institutions to match his relentless personal tempo, treating obedience and effort as substitutes for administrative persuasion. His strained relations with the Navy Board illustrate why qualities valuable in operational command can become liabilities when senior leadership requires delegation, compromise, and attention to cost.
