SAMSON and SPY cooperation without radar uniformity

A tentative SAMSON-SPY combination raises questions about complementary radar roles, electronic interference, and continued national capability.

Notes

A possible SAMSON-SPY arrangement would give SPY the long-range role handled by the second radar on Type 45. The idea comes from discussions heard about the two radar families, rather than a demonstrated installation. Their capabilities could complement each other, but electronic interference could also make integration difficult. Both systems have further improvements under way in the account given here. National radar development is then connected with the desire to retain some independent capability over a warship's long life. Common work on systems is presented alongside uncertainty about future relationships between partners.
