HMS Saltburn used Type 79 radar in 1936 as radar gained a place in fleet defence. Henderson, the Third Sea Lord, wanted faster progress and more data collection. Funding and Treasury debates are presented as obstacles to that acceleration. An accelerated programme could have put radar aboard destroyers entering service from 1937 and spread it through the force sooner. The subsequent installations went to a cruiser and then a battleship, with Sheffield tentatively recalled as the cruiser.

Saltburn's radar trials and an earlier fleet rollout
Saltburn's 1936 trials introduce a counterfactual in which faster testing and funding bring radar to new destroyers from 1937.
