Saints and the memory of Malta's first siege

Legends of Saints George, Paul, and Agatha preserve a religious memory of the defence and inform a cautious interpretation of female leadership.

Notes

Maltese legends place Saints George, Paul, and Agatha within the island's defence. George appears as a local patron, while Paul is said to have fought from a white horse with a dagger. A separate tradition dated here to 1551 has Agatha appear to a Benedictine nun and provide guidance against invasion. Agatha's prominence contributes to the proposed female-command interpretation of the earlier siege. Religious memory offers a possible clue to a remembered female role, but the later vision story does not establish who commanded the earlier defence.
