Saint-Malo as the decisive amphibious contrast

A rapid strike on Saint-Malo turned naval access into the destruction of a major concentration of French privateering and merchant shipping.

Notes

Duncan next saw a more decisive model of amphibious warfare under the Duke of Marlborough and Richard Howe. The expedition struck Saint-Malo to damage the commerce and privateering infrastructure concentrated there. British forces destroyed about thirty privateers and roughly one hundred other merchant vessels while taking very light casualties. The contrast with Rochefort is direct: prompt execution converted naval mobility into a strategically useful raid.
