Chapter · 23:21-25:04

From decorated captain to naval institution-builder

Saint-Bon’s terms as navy minister and chief of staff let him shape Italian training, infrastructure, torpedo specialization, and battleship policy.

Notes

Saint-Bon served as minister of the navy from July 1873 to March 1876 and again in 1891-92, and became the Regia Marina’s first chief of staff in 1884 before later entering the Senate. He proved politically durable across changing governments while establishing training and infrastructure policy. His appointments gave the organisational work of unification a durable place inside both naval administration and national politics. Although he introduced torpedoes and a torpedo specialty, his larger legacy lay in unifying the service and shaping its battleships.
