Why Safi's concrete coastal battery looked more dangerous

Safi's protected, fire-controlled 135 mm battery posed a greater threat than a nearby group of larger field guns in open positions.

Notes

A viewer supplies source detail that explains the U.S. Navy's threat assessment before the landing at Safi, Morocco. The principal battery had four 135 mm guns in concrete emplacements, supported by a fire-control station and a modern rangefinder. A second battery about two miles south used three 155 mm field guns, probably in open positions. Protection and organized fire control therefore made the smaller-caliber concrete battery a more serious naval target than gun size alone would suggest.
