Sackville's original commanding officer was removed after a troubled pre-commissioning period, and the crew was dispersed among other ships. A replacement commander and crew gave the vessel a fresh start. Rapid fleet expansion made experienced leaders and navigators difficult to find for all the new ships. A wartime boiler failure later left Sackville with one boiler, yet she continued into a postwar survey career. A design descended from sloops therefore returned to work associated with the older sloop role.
