Tracing a ship through changes of name and ownership

Successive register entries can connect a vessel's names, owners and transfers when a search under one familiar name reaches a dead end.

Notes

A ship register can help trace vessels whose ownership or identity has changed. Searching a familiar name may return a transfer without immediately revealing the vessel under its later name, making a fuller sequence of records useful. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency's online register provides one route to British registration information. A participant also recalls working through successive editions of small-ships registers in a naval museum library to reconstruct one vessel's registration and ownership. That research took a week under the library's access arrangements. Following a vessel over time can therefore require more than a single name search.
