Chapter · 6:28-8:51

Korea, imperial expansion, and the attack on Port Arthur

Russian and Japanese competition for security, ports, and resources frames the war's opening attack and Japan's uneven operational results.

Notes

The war's outbreak in February 1904 follows competing Russian and Japanese ambitions in East Asia. Both powers seek geographical positions that improve their security and access to ports, trade, and raw materials. Japan opens hostilities with a surprise attack on Port Arthur, although the attack and subsequent operations fall short of some Japanese expectations. The later use of surprise in 1941 raises the question of how opponents interpreted Japan's earlier methods of opening hostilities. Operational delays and incomplete successes complicate the story of Japanese victory.
