Battlefield deaths were only part of Russia's losses. Disease, poor sanitation, and starvation killed many more men, although the surviving totals vary widely. Russian definitions of wounded may also omit soldiers who were treated and returned to the line. Roughly seventy-five thousand prisoners, many taken at Port Arthur, added another burden. The fleet's collapse occurred inside a land campaign whose transport and medical systems were failing too.
