The Russian squadron brought deep seagoing experience

Azov's captain Mikhail Lazarev embodied the Russian force's unusual depth in exploration, fleet command, and later institutional leadership.

Notes

Lazarev had already circumnavigated the globe three times before Navarino, including service with Bellingshausen's expedition. That experience made Azov's captain one of the coalition's most practiced blue-water officers. He later commanded in the Baltic and Black Sea, promoted steam development, and trained officers who became central to Russian naval history. His presence under Van Heyden demonstrates that the Russian contribution was led by professional seamen rather than ceremonial appointees.
