The treaty also tried to restrain Russian gains

London bound Russia against territorial and commercial advantage, but a new Russo-Turkish war soon tested those promises.

Notes

The settlement was meant to prevent the Greek crisis from becoming an opportunity for unilateral Russian expansion. Russia promised not to seek Ottoman territory or exclusive commercial advantages through the intervention. Its 1828 invasion across the Danube and the Treaty of Adrianople then tested how much those promises constrained Russian policy. British and French leaders consequently viewed the war not only as support for Greece but as another struggle over the European balance of power.
