Was the Russian Navy's loss of Moskva its Hood or General Belgrano moment?
Short answerNeither; its operational effect is closer to Taranto, a serious material and symbolic reverse that did not remove the fleet from the war.
NotesIn this October 2022 assessment, Taranto offers the closest analogy for the loss of Moskva. The Black Sea Fleet has lost an important asset and suffered reverses, but it continues operating with reduced power-projection capacity. Hood is a less useful comparison because the Royal Navy could absorb that loss within a much larger force. General Belgrano is also rejected as the model because the Argentine ships subsequently withdrew. Taranto combines a serious loss of ships, use of a base, and prestige with continued naval operations. This interpretation places the effect between a minor setback and the disappearance of a fleet from the war.
