Chapter · 10:20-16:09

Concentrating cruisers against a Russian battleship

A fleet action demonstrates how local numerical superiority lets several heavy cruisers and supporting battleships overwhelm an isolated Russian capital ship.

Notes

The engagement turns on concentration rather than an even ship-for-ship contest. Six heavy cruisers attack while three battleships add supporting fire against the isolated Russian capital ship. The Russian vessel's 13.9-inch guns give it individual power, but the British force can bring many more hulls and guns into the local action. Within the campaign, Britain can replace a damaged cruiser quickly, while Russia is unlikely to replace the lost battleship and its supporting force at the same rate.
