Why Constantinople mattered to imperial Russia

Russian interest in Constantinople joined Orthodox religious claims to the strategic goal of opening the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

Notes

Constantinople's Roman and Orthodox inheritance made it one of the most important sacred objectives in Russian imperial thought. Russian rulers presented themselves as heirs to the eastern Roman tradition and repeatedly looked toward the Ottoman-held city. Control of the straits also offered a practical maritime prize by connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The passage therefore links religious legitimacy and access to sea power rather than reducing Russian expansion to either motive alone.
